The Unsung Irish Hero of the Ice

Celebrate one of Ireland's greatest and most remarkable adventurers with this striking artwork of Tom Crean — the Kerry man who became a legend of Antarctic exploration, yet remained quietly modest about his extraordinary feats for the rest of his life.

Born in Annascaul, Co. Kerry in 1877, Tom Crean served on three of the most famous Antarctic expeditions in history — under Robert Falcon Scott on the Discovery and Terra Nova expeditions, and alongside Ernest Shackleton on the legendary Endurance expedition. His courage, endurance, and good humour in the face of unimaginable hardship made him an indispensable member of every crew he sailed with.

Among his most heroic acts was a solo 35-mile march across the Ross Ice Shelf to save the lives of his companions — an act of selfless bravery that earned him the Albert Medal. He later rowed 800 miles across the most treacherous ocean on earth in an open boat, and scaled the mountains of South Georgia to raise the alarm and save the entire Endurance crew.

Tom Crean returned home to Kerry, opened a pub called The South Pole Inn, and never sought fame. This artwork is a reminder that true heroism often goes quietly about its business — just like the man himself.
