There are places in Ireland that stop you in your tracks. Newgrange is one of them.

Standing before the great passage tomb of the Boyne Valley, you feel the full weight of five thousand years of history. Older than Stonehenge. Older than the Egyptian pyramids. Built by people who understood the land, the sky, and the turning of the seasons in ways we can barely imagine today.

It was that feeling — that quiet, almost overwhelming sense of time — that drew me to paint it.

Capturing the Golden Hour

I wanted to paint Newgrange at the moment it feels most alive: as the sun dips low over the Boyne Valley and the ancient stones are bathed in warm, golden light. The amber glow washing across the monument, the surrounding landscape softening into rich ochres and deep greens, the sky alive with colour.

Oil paint is the perfect medium for this kind of light. The richness of the pigment, the way colours blend and layer — it lets you chase that warmth in a way that feels true to the place.

About the Painting

This original Newgrange oil painting is painted on board in expressive, hand-mixed oils. It measures 16¾" × 13½" including its walnut floating frame, and is ready to hang. It is a one-of-a-kind original — just this painting, and the hours spent making it.

Newgrange and the Irish Landscape

Co. Meath's Boyne Valley is one of the most extraordinary corners of Ireland. The landscape rolls gently, the river winds through it, and Newgrange sits at the heart of it all — a monument that has watched the winter solstice sunrise for over five millennia. To paint it is to try to do justice to all of that.
